Injured Workers of New York, Inc. is celebrating over ten years of service to workers who have become disabled from workplace injuries and/or illnesses. We are the oldest and largest, statewide, support and advocacy group for injured workers that are trying to navigate New York State's workers' compensation system. We are a 501c-3 tax-exempt, nonprofit. We, also, hold a seat on the NYS Workers' Compensation Board's Practices & Procedures Committee.

WHAT WE DO/HAVE DONE FOR INJURED WORKERS:
1. Assisted in getting passed the first IME fraud bill in the nation.
2. Worked with Consumer Reports Magazine in getting the injured worker story told (Feb. 99).
3. Hosted the largest and most-international Injured Workers International Network Conference 2000.
4. Assisted NYCOSH and the NYS AFL-CIO in the publication of a manual on IME Fraud which exposed the abuses and illegalities of the insurer-influenced system of medical examinations.
5. We hold a seat on the New York State Workers' Compensation Board's Practices & Procedures Committee and continue to represent the injured worker's side at the Board.
6. We've joined with unions to speak out on the abuses of the workers' compensation system.
7. We regularly speak at the Injured Workers Memorial Day Ceremonies in WNY.
8. We've worked with the credible media to present the injured worker's side in the system of workers' compensation.
9. We've educated politicians and businesspeople on the realities of what is really happening in the workers' compensation system.
10. We've assisted over 450 injured workers in getting the proper medical, legal and financial help needed to get through the system.
11. We continue to speak out against fraud by corporate America, the insurers, the IME's and governmental agencies and officials.
12. We try to prevent suicide among injured workers (which is commonplace).
14. We received a $3,000 grant from the State of New York to further assist injured workers.

ACCORDING TO:
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners: the average profit margin for workers' compensation to insurance companies was 14.3% as opposed to auto insurance (5.5%) and homeowners insurance (5.4%)
The Center on Worker Injury Policy, Inc.: NY places 34th in the nation for having the lowest weekly benefit rate. NY's maximum weekly benefit replaces only 53% of the state's average weekly wage which puts NY dead last in the nation.
If Governor Pataki further cuts benefits by imposing caps, we will rank among the four worst states in workers' compensation benefits to permanently (and most sriously) disabled workers.
It should be noted that although the maximum benefit in NY is $400 a week, most of us that have been seriously disabled do not get that.
It should, also, be noted that the minimum benefit rate in NY is $40 a week. The highest lump sum payment in NY was $150,000.
